So I wrote this over a three week vacation I took to visit family on Canada’s east coast. My friend Levi asked me to write him something during my time away, and this is the result. I have a lot written besides this, and more than a fair host of ideas left to write, so I’ll still be writing in the foreseeable future.

    Returning from weeks in the outback to civilization was always a treat for Sniper – for all that he was a hardened bushman, there were some luxuries he enjoyed beyond expression. A proper shower was one, and despite his reputation as a loner, spending time with friends or family again was another. It was just such an occasion when he was paying a visit to his mum at the old ranch she and his father had tended since before he was born.

    His welcome home was less than stellar; his mum seemed agitated and worn-out, complaining about a midnight spam-caller before Sniper even stepped over the threshold. He helped her to a chair and soothed her with promises that he would have words with the man, apologizing on his behalf as he moved to the kitchen phone.

    “You have… twenty-three… new messages,” echoed the flat female voice when Sniper hit the replay button on the recorder. He scratched his scalp under his hat, uttering a curse as he placed the machine on the kitchen table and sat down with a sigh.
